So...whatsa Hoopty?

Ol' Hoopty is an Asheville, NC-based funk/rock/blues band made up of George Scott on organ, Steve Cohen on bass, Bill Norlin on guitar and Mike Berlin on drums.

So what the heck is a "hoopty" anyway?

Here are a coupla definitions from the online Urban Dictionary...

Definition #1:
Any car that meets the following: a) driver must enter car through passenger side b) three different brand and size tires - 3 of them missing hubcap c) exhaust is held up by half a clothes hanger - other half replaces the antenna d) backfires every three blocks - loudest backfire being when car is turned off e) must open door at drive-threws as windows don't roll down f) you only get one AM station and the tape deck eats all tapes inserted g) can't open the glove box as the whole thing will fall out h) if you let go of steering wheel while driving you'll make a u-turn i) must manually move blinker lever up and down as it no longer blinks on it's own j) must keep one foot on brake and one on accelerator when at a complete stop k) has had the same temporary registration sticker in the window for the last 18 months l) has all the above issues but still has a $200 professional tint job

Definition #2:
An automobile which is most likely older than it's owner, but not old enough to be an eye-catching classic. Sporting a very dull paint job and Psoriasis-like rust spots, do-it-yourself tints with more bubbles than a freshly opened champaign bottle, a fully installed racing drivers seat (with the other seats left stock and most likely broken/torn), 5" plastic (or for more well-off hoopty drivers, aluminium) rims bought at a local Wal-Mart, and a 7-inch megaphone muffler that belches out a large jet ski like sound, possibly so that the driver can attract the attention of blind chicks who could otherwise remain unaware of the hideousness of this vehicle.

Ok...here's the deal with our Ol'Hoopty...

Our Ol' Hoopty was born in the mysterious ravines of Groovemont, NC, right outside the tragically hip burg of Asheville. Initially convened as a men's social club and child edification program, the lads soon recognized a shared enthusiasm for the music of Al Green and Jimmy Smith, and for bean soups of all varieties. After long winter nights spent in the woodshed, occasionally interrupted by a deputy sheriff conveying the discontent of the neighbors, the band emerged fully formed, like Athena sprung from the head of Zeus, to play at the French Broad Brewery as "The Grooveknockers". The music was great, but the only people who failed to gag at the name were either related to the band members or owed one of them a substantial amount of money. Months of thought and research followed, as inexorably their love of automobile parts lead to a rechristening as "Ol' Hoopty". We urge you to come out and see the band as soon as you can. Tell them how much you love the name, or they may be forced to change it again. Then what will they do with that '77 Buick they just bought - the one with the fuzzy dice and the deer horns on the grille?
